From the Edge, Wireless Art for Palm Pilots From the Edge is a new project I developed in order to explore new applications of wireless technology, public art, and interactivity. It also explores the concept of exchange and ownership for art made on digital platforms. I have created animations specifically for the Palm OS platform. These animations are self-contained applications that run as independent files, they have their own desktop icon and can be beamed to other devices. The installation for the artwork is custom built with a Handspring Visor Edge and cradle. This device runs a continual beam search that looks for other compatible devices within 16". Once located within range, the display will "send" the animation to the receiving PDA through the Infra Red port. To receive the animation, the receiving device simply points their Infra Red port towards the display and accepts the file when prompted. Once downloaded, the animation can be played anytime, over and over. The art of Origami was chosen for the animation theme because of its concept of transformation from a simple inanimate object to that of a complex shape and the idea of hand-made duplicates.
