"Couple on mattress #1"
1997
Paint on mattress
74.5 x 38.5 inches

Mattresses, like cells, are modular
units that are both personal and
universal -- generic, rectangular
forms upon which we leave our most
intimate marks.

"Couple on mattress #2"
2000
Paint on mattress
75 x 80 inches

"Couple on mattress #3"
2000
Paint on mattress
75 x 79 inches

Chromosomes are eerie representations
of our primal selves: figurative, yet
nonfigurative; gendered yet nongendered;
physical yet metaphysical.

"Groping"
2001
Oil and acrylic resin on canvases
72 x 60 inches

Mitosis -- the process by which
chromosomes in the cell's nucleus
divide and multiply -- is a vivid
enactment of the elemental drama
of merging, separation, and
transformation.

"Records embedded in resin"
2000
6 painted records embedded
in polyester resin
Each record, framed; 14.75 x 14.75 inches

Phonographic records are curiously
analagous to DNA: both are encoded
materials with coiled information
that unfolds in time.
