MONOLGUE Exhibited @ www.gallerythe.org June 30 through September 5, 2005 Work by: Zachary Drucker, Katie Kingma, Monique Perreault, Ashley Reid and Martha Thorneloe Recent graduates of the BFA photography program, Zachary Drucker, Katie Kingma, Monique Perreault, Ashley Reid and Martha Thorneloe work in the self portrait-genre to express ideas derived from experience. Each photographer chooses to control the working environment creating a stage like atmosphere in which specific monologues are acted out. Here the viewer comes in close contact to the character/artist, participating in an intimate exchange. The viewers presence is strongly implied throughout all of the work; the subject is speaking to the audience. Also contained in the work are various ideas on the way that females are portrayed, or choose to portray themselves. Like Cindy Sherman the artists assume a role familiar to the viewer; however these roles are not references to collective symbols of women but instead stand for different facets of the individuals' personality. The work as a whole speaks clearly about the way women experience themselves and how they interpret the expectations to present themselves in specific ways. Each artist is honest, bringing up images and issues that are not commonly addressed in art dealing with female roles and femininity in general. The exhibit will include a site specific performance by Thornloe that is inspired by the four photographers showing. Her performance is meant to highlight the dynamic between audience and performer, adding an interactive element to the exhibit. |
